Unfamiliar with Gender Euphoria?
Perhaps you have heard of/used the term Gender Dysphoria? Gender dysphoria describes a negative feeling of conflict between gender/sexed aspects of oneself. Gender EUPHORIA is the absence of this conflict!

In the healthcare community diagnoses are used to experiences with interventions/care- Gender dysphoria is an example of this. Often times these diagnoses are needed to meet insurance authorization(s). Per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) Gender Dysphoria refers to a marked, clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning caused by a, at least 6-month, incongruence between one's experienced/expressed gender and their assigned birth gender.

The use of Gender Dysphoria as a term and labeling can be a trigger and further perpetuate that something is wrong/broken when expressing self. Shifting toward gender euphoria concentrates on positive experiences of self/self expression.

Gender euphoria can be emotional, psychological, or even physical. For example, someone might feel it when:
Being addressed with the correct/affirming name and pronouns
Seeing their appearance reflect how they understand their gender
Wearing and having access to clothing, hairstyles, or accessories that feel congruent to their expression
Having their gender respected in social, family, or professional settings including genders outside of the binary and/or assigned at birth
Experiencing their body in a way that feels congruent with their identity(s)
The experience can be big and noticeable (excitement, relief, happiness) or quiet and subtle (calm, ease, a sense of “this feels right”).
WHat can Gender Euphoria Look Like?
Anyone can experience something similar when their gender expression is affirmed or fits comfortably with how they see themselves - Bringing focus on positivity that is a universal/relatable experience associated with expression of one’s self and affirmation of that expression.
The term was initially created to describe the joyous feelings of rightness with one’s gender and/or gender expression among the gender diverse community (transgender, nonbinary, genderfluid, etc.).
Occurs in moments when self expression is not limited or censored.
Who Experiences gender euphoria?
Its that feeling you get when:
best haircut/grooming
favorite outfit for night out
shoes that make the dress
the “this is one” when trying on clothes
Why Gender Euphora Matters? WHat is the IMpact?
Gender Euphoria promotes sense of belonging, value in one’s self, self-worth, connectivity, community, and engagement among other positive mental health outcomes.
Authenticity reduces suicidality
It helps shift conversations about gender away from only focusing on distress or pathology
Disrupts patterns of isolation and connection breakers/barriers
It provides language to describe what supports people, not just what harms them
Empowers self alignment and empowerment
Gender euphoria evolves over time as one learns about one’s self - it is one a one and done experience
