Gender euphoria can be emotional, psychological, or even physical. For example, someone might feel it when:

  • Being addressed with the correct/affirming name and pronouns

  • Seeing their appearance reflect how they understand their gender

  • Wearing and having access to clothing, hairstyles, or accessories that feel congruent to their expression

  • Having their gender respected in social, family, or professional settings including genders outside of the binary and/or assigned at birth

  • Experiencing their body in a way that feels congruent with their identity(s)

The experience can be big and noticeable (excitement, relief, happiness) or quiet and subtle (calm, ease, a sense of “this feels right”).

WHat can Gender Euphoria Look Like?

Anyone can experience something similar when their gender expression is affirmed or fits comfortably with how they see themselves - Bringing focus on positivity that is a universal/relatable experience associated with expression of one’s self and affirmation of that expression.

The term was initially created to describe the joyous feelings of rightness with one’s gender and/or gender expression among the gender diverse community (transgender, nonbinary, genderfluid, etc.).

Occurs in moments when self expression is not limited or censored.

Who Experiences gender euphoria?

Its that feeling you get when:

  • best haircut/grooming

  • favorite outfit for night out

  • shoes that make the dress

  • the “this is one” when trying on clothes

Gender Euphoria promotes sense of belonging, value in one’s self, self-worth, connectivity, community, and engagement among other positive mental health outcomes.

  • Authenticity reduces suicidality

  • It helps shift conversations about gender away from only focusing on distress or pathology

  • Disrupts patterns of isolation and connection breakers/barriers

  • It provides language to describe what supports people, not just what harms them

  • Empowers self alignment and empowerment

  • Gender euphoria evolves over time as one learns about one’s self - it is one a one and done experience
